Our Research Domain

Solid waste management has become a serious concern in urban areas of Sri Lanka. This research arises from a study that aim to identify an ICT-based solution for managing solid waste effectively. This solution mainly includes features such as locating common waste hotspotsand displaying on a map, developing a dynamic schedule for collecting garbage, developing an IoT based smart component to identify the overflowing garbage bins by and automatically notify the municipal council and a service rating mechanism for garbage collectors. To bring these solutions together, on a single platform, a web application has been designed and developed with all the necessary features. The project’s end goal is to manage disposalmethodically before the problem becomes worse and to appraise trash collectors for their service. The findings of this study contribute to the practice and literature on ICT for Development.

Map to Identify Predicted Illegal Waste Hotspots Based on the Location Type

The serious issue that is starting to cause this waste management imbalance is illegal garbage dumping in cities. The worst-case scenario for this habit is that CMC is unable to track or identify those dumping spots, and eventually it will turn into a massive garbage pile coursing through the civilians, making them sick and dragging them into a slew of other problems, and thus this study area provides a solution to mitigate that problem. Trash-pot includes a map that predicts garbage hotspots for a given location. This will make the CMC's task much easier, as well as be beneficial to the city's environment and citizens' health.

Objectives of the research component:

  • Identifying the most frequently occurring location types and develop a city map to plot area
  • Provide an option to filter the map by area name
  • Spot the predicted garbage dumps according to the selected location type .

Schedule for Manage Overall Garbage Collection Process in Colombo Area

In Sri Lanka, Colombo municipal council has a static schedule (Timetable) for the process of collecting garbage, but the problem is that the schedule updated according to any considerable factors such as the public events held in that particular area, local weather conditions public holidays and seasonal festivals, service providers’ requirements, etc. For this problem, this research provides a novel approach for allocating garbage trucks and employees correctly and creating proper schedule for the process of collecting garbage and managing workflow

Objectives of the research component:

  • Detect the public events which are published on selected websites to recognize the uninformed events within given geographical area.
  • Generate weather forecasting report for a day/week according to the weather condition of a selected geographical area.
  • Create a dynamic schedule which can update dynamically according to some selected internal and external factors.

IoT Based Software Smart Binto Indicate the Level of Garbage Bins.

In many cities around the World Garbage bins or Dustbins are dumped beyond their capacity, and they tend to be ineffective. As the place gets dirtier. Modern techniques for better solid waste segregation, collection, and disposal are the need of the hour. One of the sensors uses an Ultrasonic signal to monitor the level of garbage in the dust bin and if the level exceeds the set point a warning signal is sent to the concerned Authorities based on an Arduino program and another sensor senses the odor around the dust bin. GSM module and GPS modem are used for signal transmission and for tracking the location respectively

Objectives of the research component:

  • Display LED indicators according to garbage level and an automatic lid opening and closing function when a user throws garbage into the bin
  • Locking system to lock the bin when the bin is half-filled and going to overturn
  • When the bin is filled up after the garbage level is passing the threshold value, the bin will lock itself and there is a function to unlock the bin using RFID technology
  • Bin location, bin status, and bin usage will display in a dashboard to be visible to system users

Evaluate the Services and Performance of the Garbage Collectors

Over the past decades, rapid urbanization and industrialization have resulted in environmental problems. Because of that, it is very important to manage garbage collection effectively. Currently, garbage collectors are not subjected to any rating or productivity measurement. Hence, garbage collection service faces some issues nowadays. As garbage decomposition is not handled properly, it has become a major issue with increasing diseases. This planned system has taken the necessary steps to fix that issue. As a solution, it was decided to build up a service rating algorithm for the improvement of the efficiency and productivity of garbage collectors and garbage collection services.

Objectives of the research component:

  • Build up an algorithm for the improvement of the efficiency and productivity of garbage collectors
  • Develop a rating system for evaluating garbage collection services and the performance of garbage collectors
  • Identify the negative/neutral/positive comments which were added by the citizens using the NLP (Sentiment analysis)
  • To develop a star rating prediction for overall service feedback.
